Health risk assessment of contaminated sites
– Pitfalls and some handy tips (1-day session)

Full day. $600 on or before 31 August 2011; $650 after 31 August 2011

This training workshop, hosted by the Australasian College of Toxicology & Risk Assessment (ACTRA), will feature a series of short case study presentations by experienced consultants who will outline some common traps and pitfalls in conducting a HRA on contaminated sites. The emphasis will be on providing pragmatic advice based on their experiences. Some of the topics to be covered will include:

  • sampling and analysis of contaminants
  • managing auditors and regulator's expectations
  • vapour intrusion
  • managing societal and corporate risk
  • guidelines vs recipes, and
  • use of modelling in risk assessment.

Characterisation and evaluation of vapour intrusion
(1-day session)

Full day. $600 on or before 31 August 2011; $650 after 31 August 2011

This course will provide attendees with a basic working knowledge of the full gamut of factors that influence vapor intrusion, and sufficient reference material (e.g. decision flowcharts, checklists, summary tables, citations) to assist them in their future work in this technical area. Science communication (½-day session)

Half day. $50 on or before 31 August 2011; $75 after 31 August 2011

A workshop for PhD students and early career researchers looking to enhance their science communication skills. One aspect of science communication aims to connect the ‘How’ and the ‘Why’, with the ‘How’ being scientific research, and the ‘Why’ as the angle of interest for stakeholders. It is imperative that scientists are able to understand the mindsets of their audience in order to make their messages meaningful, memorable and ripple beyond every encounter. This ½-day workshop will train scientists beyond a limited ‘skill-set’ for specific application; it focuses on a ‘mindset’ about communications in various contexts. This session will:

  • explore the relationship between communication skill-sets and mind-sets, and
  • help scientists appreciate and connect the ‘Why’ in science communication.
